From our own Meela, here is what her passion-driven event means to her on this Juneteenth:
Light The Mic didn’t start because someone handed us a spotlight. It grew because artists showed up for each other, week after week. Because Black joy, creative expression, and storytelling deserve more than a single month or weekend. They require ongoing space, resources, and community support.

At its heart, Light The Mic is a community gathering rooted in the belief that our stories matter. It is a place where artists, musicians, poets, and storytellers can share their work, be witnessed, and connect with others. It is a place where emerging artists stand beside established ones, where creativity is nurtured, and where culture is celebrated in real time.
As a multidisciplinary artist, yoga facilitator, and founder of Jijivisha Holistic, I believe creativity is more than self-expression. It is a tool for healing, connection, remembrance, and transformation. Some of the most important moments in our lives happen when we finally find the words, song, image, or story that helps us make sense of our experience.
That belief comes from my own life. I have lived through profound loss, including the death of my brother to gun violence, and survived a stroke at age 30. Both experiences taught me how deeply we need community and how powerful it can be to feel seen. Healing does not happen in isolation. Neither does liberation.
That is what Juneteenth means to me.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reminder that freedom is not only about what we are released from. It is about what we are free to build. Free to create. Free to imagine. Free to tell our stories. Free to rest. Free to take up space.
Light The Mic continues to be a space where Black creativity, cultural memory, and joy take up space on purpose. It exists so that artists are not only seen, but valued. So that our stories are not only remembered, but shared. So that future generations inherit more than survival, they inherit possibility.
Every artist who steps up to the mic becomes part of that legacy, we call them LTM All Stars. Wanna be one? Pull up to experience it for yourself this Juneteenth Art Splinter Collective. Showtime is 7pm, don’t be late! We have a stacked lineup – come check the vibes and maybe sign up to perform at the next one!
This Juneteenth, check out the artists on their Instagram! You can also follow Light the Mic Instagram to be updated for all future shows!
