Accessibility

Splinter Collective is committed to hosting accessible and safe events for all community members. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility, please contact access@splintercollective.org.

In order for us to best accommodate you, please send your event specific accessibility requests at least five days prior to the event.

The Space and Physical Accessibility:

  • The Splinter Courtyard is all one level. The ground is packed dirt with small gravel that is wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp to access the stage. One of the stalls in the bathroom has a bar, but only on one side.
  • Lighting: for night events, there will be hanging garden lights around the space. While fairly bright, it can leave some spots harder to see for those with various vision challenges, so please let us know if you have any concerns or if we can support you in navigating the space. When on stage there are stage lights to help the people in the space and on Zoom to see you. Please feel free to wear sunglasses on stage if that feels helpful or ask us prior to your time to dim the lights for you, and we are happy to do so.
  • Restroom: the restroom is an all gender restroom with two stalls, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Both stalls have grab bars. If you have trouble using the locks on the stall doors, you’re welcome to close the door to the main bathroom entrance to make it single occupancy.
  • Street parking only. We have limited accessible parking spaces, and we are working on expanding. Please feel free to email us in advance of an event to let us know how we can best meet your parking needs.

Splinter Collective is committed to hosting accessible and safe events for all community members. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility, please contact access@splintercollective.org.

Fragrance and Smoking Policy:

We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to engage fully. To be respectful of those with allergies and environmental sensitivities, we ask you to refrain from wearing strong fragrances.

Along these lines, we ask that you only smoke in the designated smoking area, located slightly north and slightly west of the bar (see site map). Smoking includes cigarettes, vaping, and anything else you choose to light up while in our space.

Other Sensory Concerns:

For those with light and noise sensitivities, Splinter Collective has free sunglasses and earplugs available at every event. Just ask the person working the door!

Masking Policy for Every Splinter Sponsored Event:

We REQUIRE all staff and guests at Splinter Collective to wear masks at every event. As we are an outdoor space, the risk of transmission is reduced but not eliminated. We provide masks for guests at every event and it is mandatory to wear them. We strongly emphasize the importance of wearing masks at all times, except for brief periods while eating and drinking. It is crucial to put your mask back on between sips and bites. This policy is in place to ensure that our disabled and immunocompromised community members can safely attend our events. We will continuously review and update our masking policy as necessary. When visiting Splinter Collective, it is mandatory to always wear a mask when approaching or speaking to a masked person.

Masking Expectations:

1ST

Masking at Splinter events is required.

SO…

We ask you to be diligent about masking so others can access the space.

PLEASE

Remember to replace your mask between sips and bites, straws available if needed.

IF

You smoke or vape, do it in the smoking area and practice social distancing.

REPLACE

Your mask when done smoking and returning to main area. Chew gum and drink water!

SO

Be mindful, take care, and see you at our ongoing and intentional Splinter programming!

Masking Policy for Rentals:

Many of the events held at Splinter Collective are rentals. Folks renting the space are required to develop and share their own Covid policies. However, our staff working rentals will continue to wear masks at all times. We make masks available at every rental, and we require guests to wear masks when interacting with our staff or approaching a masked person. It is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community members, especially those who are disabled or immunocompromised. We appreciate your cooperation in following this policy.

Benefits to wearing a mask:
  • Brings out your eyes
  • Thwarts facial recognition technology
  • Helps prevent the spread of airborne illnesses
  • Makes it harder for cops to identify you
  • Easier to avoid your enemies

Virtual Events:

We understand that even with precautions in place, there are many reasons to stay home. For that reason, we stream events virtually when possible. Currently, we stream our monthly poetry event Interrupted by Trains, and as we gain capacity, we hope to stream more live events. Over the summer, Aura Valdes hosted Queer Trans Summer, a virtual weekly coworking creative space featuring a guest artist once a month.

Potential Barriers:

Splinter Collective strives to be accessible to all members and event attendees. Due to financial, logistical, facility, and staffing limitations, some barriers still remain.

  • We are working towards having ASL interpreters at every event. Currently, Interrupted By Trains, our monthly Poetry event, is our only recurring event with ASL interpreters.
  • Some of our staff is fluent in Spanish, and most of us have some familiarity. We’re working towards integrating Spanish interpretation at events.
  • Some events may get very crowded, making it harder for people using wheelchairs and other mobility assistive devices to navigate the space. If this happens to you at an event, please flag down one of our staff members. We are happy to help by verbally clearing a path or physically assisting with permission.
  • Please know that we want to accommodate you and will do everything within our means to do so. If you see something at Splinter that restricts access for you or anyone else, please let us know!
