Movement Space

Splinter Movement Space Mission

The Splinter Movement Space is a DIY circus and exploratory somatic studio and a program of Splinter Collective, a 501c3 non-profit. It is housed in a large studio in a 100 year old warehouse located in Cukson aka Tucson, Arizona.

We aim to be a space that is inclusive of people and practices that are not always welcome, available or affirmed in traditional gym settings. This includes, but is not limited to LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, fat, neurodivergent, disabled, and poor folks, and folks with multiple marginalized and intersectional identities.

Our pricing is intentionally accessible. We have work trade options and introductory guest passes available by request for general Splinter Members for whom finances are a barrier. All keyholders must be approved, and agree to our guidelines. All classes are NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds).

Access Notes: Some classes have consistent teachers with whom you can be in direct touch, some classes rotate teachers. Most classes rely on verbal cues, and the use of hands on spotting for safety. The Movement Space is lit in the daytime by skylights, and after dark by fluorescent lights. It is currently cooled with an evaporative cooler and fans, and heated minimally with space heaters. The space is all one level, but there is a small ledge to enter from the main doors. There is another entry that is wheelchair accessible. If you have additional access needs or questions please reach out to us.

Class Information

Acro, also often called partner acrobatics or Acroyoga is a practice that draws on traditions such as circus acrobatics, gymnastics, cheer, contact improv, dance, and yoga. A typical class will involve a warm-up, spotting and safety guidelines, calibrations, conditioning, and learning a skill or sequence of moves. Skills include inversions, counterbalances, therapeutic movements, L-basing, flying, standing balances and spotting. You do not need a partner, but skills frequently involve physical contact with one or more other humans. Expect an exciting social environment, in which eye contact, verbal cues, and verbal communication are heavily used. Beginners are welcome at the class, but need to accurately self-assess participation as skills are introduced as moves are often more intermediate level. The classes (and jams) rely on more experienced folks in the room to help acclimate and support newer folks. However in a class the teachers may group based on levels or may mix levels in groups.

An aerial class designed for learning the basics of the Lyra or aerial hoop. Are you interested in gaining confidence and strength on the aerial hoop? This class focuses on mounting and dismounting, beginner-friendly shapes and sequences, conditioning and spin tolerance (if interested). All skill levels are welcome to come and play, but this class is geared towards folks with little to no aerial experience. Jams are social gatherings where folks are welcome to come and practice around others. Some jams are themed, and the Flow jams lean more towards dance and flow skills such as juggling, poi, staff, etc. Jams are not guided and attendees are expected to practice accurate self assessment, and have fun exploring and training in a safe way.
