Miriam Hacksaw

Friday May 29 in the courtyard
Miriam Hacksaw is an old time fiddler, banjoist, and percussionist based in New Orleans. She grew up in Oregon, where she learned to play old time music at local jams and festivals around the Northwest. Miriam is mixed Malayali-American, and collects folk songs from Kerala, India, bringing fragments of her ethnic background into the North American folk traditions that she participates in. As a trans lesbian of color, Miriam writes into the tradition as well, rewriting old songs as well as composing new songs in old styles to uplift historically marginalized perspectives. Alongside touring and recording, she facilitates workshops on old time music, oral tradition and diaspora at festivals around the country. Miriam released her debut EP “The Lupine” on the Winter Solstice of 2024. You can find her on social media @miriamhacksaw.
