July Announcements

We’ve spent the month of June resting and reflecting, imagining what our space will look like in a month, a year, five years. Growth can be uncomfortable, and has been pushing us to level up communication skills, pathways, and even our definitions of community. At Splinter, we firmly believe in pushing back against expectations of constant productivity at the expense of self and community care. If our meetings this month have shown us anything- and they’ve shown us a lot- it’s that we must move forward with intention, compassion, and spirit.

We’ll be extending our soft closure through the rest of the summer (July and August), with the exception of a few events (details at the end of this email!). Our biggest project this summer is leveling the decomposed compacted granite in the courtyard to make it fully wheelchair accessible. We’ll be having several community work days at the end of July, if you’re interested in getting involved please keep an eye on our instagram for more details!

Another major change we’re working on is switching over to a membership model. We haven’t worked out all the kinks yet but will be having a month-long membership drive that ends in an in-person re-opening celebration at the beginning of September! Stay tuned to our socials and newsletters for details once we’ve got them figured out.

UPCOMING EVENTS & CALLS FOR SUPPORT

This Saturday 7/9/2022 7:00 PM, we’ll be hosting a mural unveiling in collaboration with Tohono O’odham/Oglala Lakota artist Lucky Salaway and Yoeme artist Sal “Wagonburner” Sawaki to help fundraise for their next project. They are planning to travel to Pine Ridge, SD to do an after school/Suicide prevention program called The BEAR Program. The trip will be documented in an upcoming film called “Portal to Pine Ridge” with Yoeme videographer Elijah Garcia. There will be music, drinks, dancing, prizes! Please visit this link: https://gofund.me/3d60c3e3 to learn more and donate to support their journey!

We are also hosting a noise opera on 8/22/2022 at 8:00 PM. We don’t have a flyer or full details to share yet but we’ll share them before the event!

We also want to ask y’all for support for Ronah, our friend, family member and an essential piece of the brain that makes Splinter run. Ronah is raising funds for the continued care of her mother Cinnamon, who has been going through treatment for stage 4 metastatic brain cancer since early this year. They were able to hire an in-home caregiver which will take enormous strain off Ronah, and any funds donated will go directly toward this much-needed care. You can find the gofundme here https://tinyurl.com/cinnyfunds and thank you so much in advance. It’s really making all the difference for them right now.

We miss you all sincerely, and being in space with you. We love being in community with you, thank you for being here and can’t wait to see you again.

Stay safe & be well,

Splinter
